What Type Of Dogs Should Wear Dog Clothing?
We’ve all seen countless toy poodles and Chihuahuas sporting cute little sweaters or doggie hoodies but believe it or not, these little dogs are not the only dogs that would benefit from wearing a sweater every now and then.
People tend to think that because dogs are small that they are not able to keep themselves warm. The size of the dog has absolutely nothing to do with coat that mother nature gave them. Some dogs are born with very thick coats and are very capable of keeping themselves warm in all types of weather conditions. This has nothing to do with the size of the dog and everything to do with the breed of the dog. A good example of this would be the Great Dane or the Greyhound. Both of these breeds are large breed dogs with very short hair coats and low amounts of body fat. These dogs are just not designed for the cold.
For some reason, people with large dogs tend to think that their dogs look wimpy if they put a sweater or coat on them but people with small dogs usually don’t give it a second thought. Large dogs can need big dog clothing just as much as small dogs can need small dog clothes.
The decision of whether not your dog should be wearing a sweater or coat really has more to do with their particular body type than their size. A Pomeranian is a very small dog with a lot of hair. Believe it or not, these tiny dogs are equipped to handle the cold better than it a monstrous Great Dane is.
If you have a large dog with a very short coat and a low amount of body fat, do them a favor and buy them a sweater or two. Then, when it’s a little bit chilly outside, dress them in one if you’re going to take them for a walk. They will be much more comfortable and less likely to catch a chill. A general rule of thumb is to go by how your body feels. If it’s chilly outside to you it’s probably chilly outside to your dog.
