Automatic Litter Boxes
No one likes to change a litter box, and often the chore is left too long precisely because of the nature of a used litter box. There are also health risks connected with changing a litter box, which makes avoiding the job as long as possible almost inevitable. Fortunately for cat owners, the answer to this problem lies in the automatic litter box. Available in several different styles, these boxes basically free the cat owner from the onerous task of removing clumps of urine and feces from the box.
Most of these automatic cat litter boxes do produce a certain amount of noise when in use, and it often takes the cat and the cat’s owner time to be come accustomed to this. Some cats are initially frightened off by the noise, but generally will adapt fairly quickly to the new box. It is important to remember that clumping litter has to be used with an automatic litter box, urine will just seep through ordinary litter and pool at the bottom of the pan.
When a cat uses one of these automatic boxes, then exits, a sensor detects this and starts the box in motion. Usually some form of rake is used to comb through the litter and drag the clumps of urine and feces to the end of the box. Once the waste has been recovered, it is placed in a container that will help to prevent odors. Generally, these containers must be cleaned out once a week, and the litter in the box may also need to be changed at this time. If there are multiple cats in the household, either more litter boxes must be provided, or the box must be cleaned more frequently.
Another approach to the automatic litter box is the type that has a revolving sphere on a short pedestal. This litter disposal unit senses the weight of your cat, and seven minutes after this has been detected (long enough for your cat to have finished its business), the sphere will begin to rotate. The wastes will be deposited in a special drawer that is lined with ordinary plastic bags, leaving the litter in the globe clean and ready for the cat’s next visit. Once again, it might take a bit of time for your cat to get used to this type of automatic litter box, but most cats will accept it within a few days.
Automatic cat litter boxes will keep the whole house cleaner and fresher smelling, as well as keeping wastes isolated. These boxes also give you more time to enjoy your cat, rather than changing dirty litter.
